Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, Matthew's interest in health and environmental economics was shaped by the Pacific Northwest 's ecosystem and rising wildfire risks. His current research focuses on the health impacts of wildfire smoke. Before starting his PhD, Matthew attended the University of Oregon where he graduated magna cum laude with a BS in Economics.
