He is a Research Associate at the Toulouse School of Economics and Distinguished Visiting Professor at Renmin University in Beijing. He works on resource and environmental problems in developing countries. His works have been published in the *American Economic Review*, the *Journal of Political Economy* and *Econometrica*. His current research focuses on energy efficiency in rice production in Bangladesh and the role of highways in groundwater depletion in China.
