On June 17, 2024, Professors Joe Aldy and Rob Stavins co-hosted the Harvard Climate Economics Pipeline Workshop. Supported by the Harvard Environmental Economics Program and the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, this workshop convened a dozen doctoral students who presented economic research addressing a rich array of climate change-related questions. The student presenters were selected through a competitive application process out of nearly sixty submissions.

Student presentations explored the macroeconomic impacts of clean energy policies; the prospect of trade enabling emission leakage from climate change policies; the local fiscal impacts of transitioning out of fossil fuels; the implications of bankruptcy law for corporate carbon emissions; evaluation of bonds with payouts based on the issuer attaining emission targets; the emission impacts of landfill methane management programs; the distributional impacts of flood management in China; the adaptation responses to wildfire smoke; the benefits of electric vehicle adoption; market power in carbon markets; and the emission impacts of New York City building regulations.

The presenters study at economics, agricultural economics, and finance departments in universities based in Canada, England, Switzerland, and the United States. While the presentations highlighted the work from emerging climate economics scholars, the discussants drew from the faculties of Boston College, Boston University, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Tufts University. The workshop provided a rich environment for feedback on presentations, the exchange of ideas for future work, and the creation of a network of the next generation of researchers tackling the most important climate economics topics.
