In a new study, “[Willingness to pay and political support for a US national clean energy standard,](http://www.nature.com/nclimate/journal/v2/n8/full/nclimate1527.html)” co-author [Joseph Aldy](/people/joseph-aldy), Faculty Fellow of the Harvard Environmental Economics Program and Assistant Professor of Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, examines how much Americans are willing to pay for clean renewable energy. Research suggests that on average they were willing to tolerate a 13 percent increase in electricity costs in pursuit of cleaner energy. The study was published in the journal *Nature Climate Change*, and cited in multiple outlets, including [*The Washington Post*](http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/post/americans-would-pay-more-for-clean-energy--but-congress-wouldnt/2012/05/14/gIQAO0vrOU_blog.html), [*The New York Times*](http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/14/willing-to-pay-a-little-for-clean-energy/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0), [*The Hill*](http://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/227271-study-public-willing-to-pay-for-clean-energy-standard), Yale University, *[Ars Technica](http://arstechnica.com/science/2012/05/american-consumers-prepared-to-pay-more-for-clean-energy/)*, and the *[Huffington Post](http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bill-chameides/is-there-a-clean-energy-s_b_1525624.html)*.
