Martin Weitzman (1942-2019)

Martin Weitzman was a Research Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics. Professor Weitzman worked in several areas of environmental economics. He attempted to clarify the "essence" of the global-warming problem as a problem of economic growth, and to extend the scope of national income accounts to include activities related to resource depletion and environmental change. Yet another area of interest was the economics of biodiversity. Previous work examined instrument choice under uncertainty. His seminal article in this field, Prices vs. Quantities in The Review of Economic Studies, is one of the most frequently cited journal articles in the field of environmental economics and continues to provide fertile ground for new research.
