Rema Hanna

Rema Hanna, a Faculty Fellow of the Harvard Environmental Economics Program, has been granted tenure and a full professorship at the Harvard Kennedy School. Rema joined the HKS faculty in July 2008 as an Assistant Professor of Public Policy, having received her Ph.D. in economics from MIT in 2005. She has since become one of the world’s leading empirical economists focusing on the intersection of development and environmental economics.  She is passionate about the rigorous evaluation of public policy—and policy choice based on evidence. She is the Scientific Co-Director of the South East Asia programs of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), dedicated to randomized evaluations to answer critical policy questions in the fight against poverty. Rema is also active in Evidence for Policy Design, a program based in HKS that works with in-country partners to bring data and economic insights to the design and implementation of public policies and programs around the world.

Some of Rema’s recent papers present research on fuel-consumption choice in India, the impact of air pollution on infant mortality and labor supply in Mexico City, and the use of advanced cooking stoves in developing countries.
